Can Bangladesh Produce More International Sports Stars in the Next Decade?

Sports development in Bangladesh is moving quickly. One of the national cricket team’s biggest achievements was reaching the quarter-finals of the 2015 World Cup. Can the country now achieve more success internationally?

Interest in sports across the country is huge. The popularity of 888STARZ registration confirms this, as local fans actively follow sports analysis and support their favourite teams. But the future of sports in Bangladesh also requires decisions at the government level.

How Bangladesh Has Developed Sporting Talent So Far

Bangladesh is not one of the world’s richest countries. At the international level, it is most active in two disciplines: cricket and football.

Bangladesh international athletes are, first of all, cricket players. The country has produced many major stars, including Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, and Mushfiqur Rahim. Other disciplines are still less visible, but they are growing.

Sport in the country has developed through a series of systematic steps. In 1986, the national sports institute BKSP was established. It allowed talented young people to combine basic education with sport.

The Importance of Youth Academies and School Sports Programs

The country runs initiatives for talented school students. The widely discussed Notun Kuri Sports programme attracted more than 160,000 participants. And this was not a one-time achievement! It created a steady flow of talent that can be prepared for national teams and international tournaments.

The next stage is the development of Bangladesh sports academies. They work as specialised training centres:

  • United Sports Academy in Dhaka – football and cricket;
  • Khelbei Bangladesh – football, cricket, and boxing;
  • Abahani Club – football, cricket, and basketball.

The government supports Bangladesh young athletes. In 2026, it allocated a record BDT 2,586 crore to sport. The goal is to connect sport with media, tourism, and jobs.

Which Sports Give Bangladesh the Best Chance of International Success?

All sports need development. But it is already clear that the strongest international opportunities for Bangladesh are in:

  • Cricket. The Bangladesh national team regularly competes in ICC tournaments. Not long ago, it reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup;
  • Football. The men’s national team regularly takes part in AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. The women’s team recently qualified for the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup;
  • Field hockey. The youth national team won the Challenger Trophy at the 2025 Junior World Cup;
  • Athletics. Participation in the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games has become common for the country. But this is still only the beginning. In the future, this experience may help local athletes qualify for the Olympic Games.

Kabaddi should not be overlooked either. It has been recognised as the national sport of Bangladesh since 1972. At the same time, kabaddi has long moved beyond the limits of a local discipline. It has grown from a niche sport into an international one. And this gives Bangladesh a unique chance to make its name on the world stage.

What Challenges Do Young Athletes in Bangladesh Face?

Poverty is one of the main challenges. Talented athletes cannot afford regular competitions and training. Young people have to choose between education and sport. And often, the choice is not in favour of sport.

The country also lacks skilled coaches. Many talented young people leave Bangladesh for better opportunities. As a result, sports talent development in Bangladesh is slowing down.

What Could Help Create a New Generation of Sports Stars?

A systematic approach can help overcome these difficulties in the future. As part of the updated National Sports Policy, the Ministry of Youth and Sports is developing the Upazila Mini Stadium project. It involves the construction of modern sports complexes in all subdistricts of the country.

For cricket and football youth development, Bangladesh brings in specialists from neighbouring countries. Local teams also compete in regional cricket tournaments and the South Asian Games. These steps are giving young athletes more chances to succeed internationally.
